A New Web Site Traffic Generation Service

If you rely heavily on web-based marketing, you might want to try out a new service for generating web site traffic, called "Recommend-It.Com" (a trademarked product from Digital Demographics). The beta version of this utility is now shipping, and it's free to web site owners and Internet users. It allows Internet users visiting a participating web site to recommend that site to colleagues without having to leave their browser screen. In a nutshell, Recommend-It.Com is tool that makes it easier to generate word-of-mouth web site referrals. A Publicity Opportunity for Internet Software Developers

Apple Computer is producing a show daily web site for the Summer Internet World 97 conference and exhibition to be held in Chicago, July 23 to 25. It will feature news from the show, a guide to the Apple booth, and coverage of Internet tools at large. Newton, Inc. to Upgrade Networking Capabilities

Newton, Inc. just announced that it's enhancing its network connectivity for Newton-based devices (such as the MessagePad 2000 and the eMate 300) with the release of Newton Internet Enabler (NIE) 2.0. This product, which includes new Ethernet connectivity capabilities, will enable users to easily integrate Newton-compatible devices into existing campus and enterprise Local Area Network (LAN) environments. The added Ethernet capability of NIE 2.0 is especially important to health-care customers. Newton, Inc. has been working closely with market-leading partners, such as Farallon (a networking expert) and Proxim (a health-care wireless solutions expert), to provide complete connectivity solutions for customers.

Apple Researchers Release a New Multimedia Authoring Tool

SK8 (pronounced "skate") is a multimedia authoring environment developed in Apple's research laboratories. Apple just released a free, unsupported prototype of this product, as well as SK8's Macintosh Common Lisp source code, for developers who would like to use it for rapid product development and prototyping. Since 1990, SK8 has been used in conducting advanced research on authoring tools and their use, as well as for prototyping new ideas and products. SK8 aims to facilitate rapid prototyping, support cross-platform development, and provide output to multiple run-time environments, including Java. SK8 can be used to create rich media tools and titles simply and quickly. It features a fully dynamic prototype-based object system, an English-like scripting language, a general purpose graphics system, and a full-featured development interface.

SK8 technology has been seeded to more than 100 sites for evaluation purposes. It has been used to prototype and develop a wide range of applications, including Cocoa, Apple's multimedia authoring tool for children. To download this software and its documentation, visit this web site:

Preview a Real Rhapsody Application

Stone Design, a long-time leader in the NeXT/OpenStep marketplace, recently announced the availability of Create 4.2 for Rhapsody. Create is a full-featured design, layout, drawing, and web-publishing application. Create 4.2 will run under Apple's "Prelude to Rhapsody" software, which was handed out to attendees at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference last May. If you have installed Prelude to Rhapsody, Create 4.2 gives you an excellent opportunity to see a real-world example of what the Rhapsody operating system will be capable of. Parametric Technology To Port Pro/REFLEX to Rhapsody

Parametric Technology (PTC), a leading supplier of software tools in the CAD/CAM/CAE industry, recently announced that it has signed a porting agreement with Apple to port their Pro/REFLEX A/E/C object-oriented modeling system to Rhapsody. PTC's decision to port Pro/REFLEX to Rhapsody marks the first time the software company has developed for an Apple platform. In their press release, PTC said their decision was "based on Apple's market-share strength."

PTC's Pro/REFLEX software is an object-oriented building modeling package that provides functionality for fully coordinated project modeling, including 2-D drafting, 3-D modeling, drawing production, inherent coordination, fully dynamic model movement in all views, element creation, interference or clash detection, and a range of data exchange capabilities.

Apple Japan Developer Conference Attendance Grows by 50 Percent

According to Apple Japan, the number of developers attending the 1997 Japan Developer Conference, held on July 8 and 9, grew to around 1,500. New Mac OS Security Contest Begins

On July 4, 1997, Infinit Information AB opened its second Crack-A-Mac contest to hackers worldwide. This time, instead of running a standard, out-of-the-box Mac OS web server, the company is exposing a cutting-edge, real-world server system to a real-world pummeling. The Crack-A-Mac server setup includes final candidate versions of WebSTAR and Mac OS 8, plus SiteEdit Pro, a multiple domain service through ClearlyHome, and database access through Lasso and FileMaker Pro. To claim the prize money (100,000 Swedish crowns, or about U.S.$ 13,000), read the contest rules, then try to alter the contents of the server's home page.

How to Fly Around Mars Using QuickTime VR

Apple's QuickTime VR Product Manager, David Palermo, recently put together a site about the Pathfinder mission to Mars. Using QuickTime VR, he's created some awesome virtual 3D simulations of this planet, as well as QuickTime VR movies that use real data from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

"Using Apple Computer's QuickTime VR," says Palermo, "you can see what the landing site area would look like if you were there. This virtual reality 'movie' was created using NASA Viking data, KPT Bryce (a rendering program), and Apple's QuickTime VR technology."

FireWire Developer Conference, July 28 to 30

FireWire technology, which was invented at Apple, is now the IEEE 1394 Serial Bus standard endorsed by over 120 companies. You can attend the 1394 Developer's Conference, held in San Jose, California, from July 28 to 30, to learn more about this technology and related development opportunities. New Java Training Course, August 5 to 8

Knoware, a software company focused entirely on the Java programming language, recently announced the availability of a new Java Fundamentals training course for Mac OS developers. Java Fundamentals is a four-day hands-on course designed to give programmers the skills they need to create useful Java applets and applications. The course includes the basics of Java syntax and object-oriented programming. It then discusses graphical user interface (GUI) programming and applet creation. Key features of the new Java 1.1 system, such as the new event model, are covered in depth. The course also includes information on advanced subjects such as streams and multitasking.

The Java Fundamentals course can be provided at your workplace, or individuals can sign up for one of Knoware's open-enrollment classes. Knoware can teach courses at your workplace using the platform of your choice, including Windows 95 and Mac OS.

Free Listings on the MacTalent Jobs Web Site

MacTalent.com is a Macintosh-exclusive employment web site that lists people with specific Macintosh expertise seeking part-time, full-time, contract, or freelance work. Skills categories include programming, engineering, graphic design, Internet, office skills, database design, and more. In all, 98 specific skills and software applications are included. The site also features "MacAnonymous," a confidential listing service for job-seekers who are currently employed and want to keep their job search discreet.

Employers and recruiters seeking to fill positions can search MacTalent's database by geographic region and keyword, as well as by specific skills. There is no cost to employers to search the database. (Other similar employment sites cost employers up to U.S.$ 6,000 a year to search.) The MacTalent web site is being heavily promoted to executive recruiters, employment-related list servers and newsgroups, user groups, and human resources departments of Macintosh-friendly corporations. Employers can also post jobs in MacTalent's Classifieds section, and through July 31, the company will take 50 percent off the normal price of second and subsequent employer listings.

During its startup period, MacTalent is offering free six-month introductory listings to build its database of talent. This offer is only available through July 31, 1997. After the free offer expires, listings cost U.S.$ 49 for six months of a basic listing, which includes 200 words of background information and postings within as many categories as you like. An enhanced listing--U.S.$ 89 for six months--includes up to 1,500 words, and is suitable for posting a full resume.

AMUG's Newton Resource CDs

The Arizona Macintosh Users Group (AMUG) maintains several resources for Apple MessagePad and eMate users. First, the group just released Volume 9 of its Totally Incomplete PDA CD-ROM. The CD contains more than 1,450 applications for Newton 1.x and 2.x users, and a new area dedicated to MessagePad 2000 and eMate solutions. It is also the exclusive home of MacMoof, an extension written by developer Griffin Cottle.
